The film is set in two timelines: the future (2023) and the past (1973). In the future, the world has been devastated by an ongoing war between mutants and Sentinels, advanced, government-controlled robots designed to hunt and exterminate mutants. The Sentinels were created to specifically target mutants, and they evolved over time to become more lethal. As a result, mutants have been hunted nearly to extinction, and the remaining survivors, including Wolverine (played by Hugh Jackman), Professor X (played by Patrick Stewart), Magneto (played by Ian McKellen), and others, are trying to prevent the extinction of their kind.
