The BFG is a 2016 fantasy film directed by Steven Spielberg, based on the beloved 1982 children’s book of the same name by Roald Dahl. The movie is a heartwarming adventure that blends whimsy, magic, and friendship, centered around the unlikely bond between a young orphan girl and a gentle giant.
The story begins in London, where Sophie, a kind-hearted and imaginative orphan, lives in an orphanage. One night, Sophie is unable to sleep and spots a mysterious figure outside her window. This figure turns out to be the BFG (Big Friendly Giant), a 24-foot-tall giant who is different from the other giants in his land. Unlike the other giants, who are fearsome and cruel, the BFG is gentle and kind-hearted. He spends his days collecting and distributing dreams to children while avoiding the company of the other, more menacing giants.
Despite his kindness, the BFG is misunderstood by humans and feared for his size, so he lives a solitary existence. When Sophie is taken by the BFG to his home in the Land of Giants, she learns that the BFG does not eat humans like the other giants but instead lives off a diet of “snozzcumbers” (a disgusting vegetable). The BFG also has a magical ability to capture and bottle dreams, which he delivers to children while they sleep. However, Sophie soon discovers that the other giants are not as friendly as the BFG; they are enormous bullies who steal children and cause havoc by eating them.
The two form a close bond, and Sophie convinces the BFG that they must stop the other giants from terrorizing the world. Together, they hatch a plan to alert the Queen of England to the giants’ terrible deeds, hoping that with her help, they can stop the giants and protect children everywhere. Sophie and the BFG travel to Buckingham Palace, where they encounter the Queen and convince her to assist in their mission. With the help of the British army, they manage to capture the other giants and imprison them, ensuring they will never harm anyone again.
