Set in the present day, the story centers around David Rivers, a troubled young man who has recently been convicted of a crime he swears he didn’t commit. As he enters the penitentiary, he starts experiencing strange and inexplicable phenomena within the prison—just as his fellow inmates and the guards begin to notice uncanny occurrences. When David meets Franklin “Frank” Morgan (a younger relative of Paul Edgecomb, the original protagonist from the first film), Frank begins to suspect that these events might be connected to the mysterious powers that once existed in Cold Mountain.
Unbeknownst to David, Frank has been haunted by the events of the original Green Mile for years. Now a grizzled prison chaplain, Frank’s world is upended when a new inmate arrives—Elijah (played by a powerful newcomer), a quiet, seemingly ordinary man with an unsettling presence. Elijah’s arrival brings with it a sense of déjà vu: strange healing powers, an unnatural sense of calm, and, like John Coffey, an ability to sense and cure illness with nothing but a touch.
As strange occurrences ramp up—death row prisoners begin to mysteriously recover from fatal illnesses, and others experience inexplicable, miraculous events—Frank and David form an unlikely bond. Meanwhile, the ghost of John Coffey (who died at the end of the original) looms large, with his memory haunting those who knew him. Frank is tormented by visions of Coffey, who communicates with him from beyond, offering cryptic warnings. He comes to realize that Elijah’s powers are tied to an ancient curse—one that has followed a bloodline and now threatens to consume Elijah.
